FluidOS Design System

A conceptual operating system designed for a foldable device

Overview

My team and I created a conceptual operating system called FluidOS build for a foldable phone we design called Fluid device. The Fluid device has both a watch view and a phone view. FluidOS is created to be extremely minimal and sleek with mainly black and gray tones. Extreme minimalism places a focus on the simple and effective UI. Without the extra noise, users are able to easily find what it is they're looking for.

Fluid OS received a 4.5/5 app store rating from a group of expert mobile designers and tied 2nd place out of 5 teams.

Smartwatch users Problems

🤳 It doesn't entirely replace a smartphone

Smartwatches offer a hands-free alternative to carrying a smartphone however due to their limited functionality can't entirely replace them.

😞 Managing both a smartphone and smartwatch can be overwhelming

Smartwatches have the means to make our lives easier and more efficient. However, the process of managing and tracking multiple devices can cause more worry than ease.

FluidOS : An integration of a phone and a smartwatch

The Fluid device is a device that my team designed to operate FluidOS. The device optimizes applications based on the current view. To change from the default phone view to the watch view simply fold the phone in a z-fold and attach it to a watch band.

Project Timeline

10 weeks, 4 sprints

Each sprint was approx. 2 weeks with a design presentation and feedback session.

Design Concepts + Principles

High-Level Descriptors

We created a design language to guide and justify our designs.

Mood Board

We created a mood board with screens that reflect our principles to inspire our designs.

Concept Schetches

Designing the device

Our team brainstormed how we would create a foldable device that can efficiently switch back and forth between a watch and a phone. We came across the z-fold design and decided to stick with it. The phone would be the default mode and can be folded and attached to a watch band.

Reflection

My Takeaways

Less is more

When we first began designing, my main concern was that the minimalism was not going to be enough for some users. I later realized that it highlights core functionalities and simplifies the user experience.

Design systems are crucial

When designing with a large team of designers, the design system allows for there to be a level of consistency across applications. When we completed the design system we were able to easily split up the remaining app screens.

Padding can make it or break it

When designing mobile screens it is crucial to have adequate padding around the screens to prevent creating touch points that aren't reachable to the user.
